The Boules in Gwent League

News and oddments

The Robin Matthews Mêlée

On the 1st May 2023 the Boules in Gwent league held their annual pre-season charity mêlée open to all members of the league.
This year it was renamed “The Robin Matthews Mêlée” to honour our league secretary/treasurer who retired this year having been in this unpaid position for 24 years,
virtually from the start of the league!
The charity chosen was Parkinson’s research.
There were 36 players from 8 clubs who played in one of the better days of the year with the sun breaking through the clouds.
The event took place at Caerleon PC who have lots of pistes and thanks to Ray Williams, Chairman, and the rugby club for agreeing to open the bar for the day.
There were five games with a break for lunch when Tansy and Paul Mayfield with Jackie Harris and Dave Long set up a game of pitch a rubber boule into a series of buckets. Great fun and thanks to them for their hard work with the competition being won by 6-year-old Sally!
The games as usual were played in a friendly manner and at the end the winner was Jim Hutchinson from the Wheatsheaf, second was Peter Shult from Abergavenny and third Ray the Hat from whichever club he turns up to play for!
There were prizes of £20, £15 and £10 - but all winners donated there winnings back into the charity fund!
At the end of the day a grand total of £250 was achieved, so again thanks to all players and their donations to this worthwhile charity.

The Peter Westall Cup
The Welsh Petanque Association is hosting the Peter Westall Cup on Sunday 11th June in the Cardiff based Monkstone Petanque Club.
It is an  open doubles event and is in memory of Peter Westall and many other ex-players that have thrown their last boule.
There is also a novice event on the Saturday 10th June - designed for new players and/or those new to competitions.

It is an open event and therefore it would be great to see entries come in from teams that play in the BIG league.
A pdf file containing the relevant information can be accessed here.

Bastille Day at Caerleon

There are still places available for the open triples event during Caerleon's Bastille Day celebrations.

Recommendation from Shun

At the start of the covid outbreak two long time members of Caerleon PC, Mark (Kiwi) and Kay emigrated to central France. They have set up a stylish gite advertised on Airbnb.

I recommend it if you would like a countryside holiday or a stay en-route through France; you cannot do better than call in on them.
