BIG Cup Final Day 2023

The venue was The Greyhound Pub Llantrisant on Saturday 9th September with hosts Kelly and Steve arranging the terrains and a BBQ. With the sun out it made a splendid setting.

All games were played in an excellent spirit which is synonymous of our league.

In the Henry Powell Cup Final Caerleon played The Upper Cocks and got over their disappointment of finishing second in the league by winning 4-0.

This final as one would expect was of a high standard. Caerleon were made to fight for every point in a final that took 2 ½ hours to complete! The Upper Cocks players were not downhearted as they enjoyed the match, and it is a learning curve for the future.

In the plate Machen played Panteg Phoenix. The scores were much closer in this match with 3 games tied at 10-10 but Panteg held their nerve better and won the three games to 10. Machen did have the consolation of winning the fourth game to 7 points.

Congratulations to the Phoenix which arose from the ashes of the old Panteg club (who had been an original member of the league) and to Machen for making the second plate final in consecutive years but getting much closer this year to winning.

Thanks to Derek Jones our treasurer who got out of his supporter’s chair a few times to be our tournament referee!

A final word is that the after-match BBQ topped the day. It was excellent and one of the best burgers I have ever had!! Well done Kelly and Steve.

PS Virtually the same Caerleon team under the name Caerleon Romans played the Welsh Petanque Cup Finals on the next day Sunday 10^th September and won another Cup!
